Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a chronic bleeding disorder that prevents blood from clotting properly. It’s the most common inherited bleeding disorder in the world.
Symptoms

- Nosebleeds that are frequent or don’t stop quickly
- Easy bruising
- Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
- Bleeding after an injury, surgery, or dental work that lasts longer than normal
- Blood in the urine
Types
- Type 1: The most common and mildest form of VWD
- Type 2: The body produces normal amounts of von Willebrand factor (VWF), but it doesn’t work properly
- Type 3: The most severe form of VWD
Treatment
- Treatments focus on stopping or preventing bleeding episodes
- Many patients require periodic treatment for bleeding symptoms
- Treatment may be needed before surgery or dental procedures

- VWD is a lifelong condition with no cure
